His Word - His Love
Yes, the Bible is God's Love Letter to a
wounded, hurting world. To most in that world, however, the Bible is
either unknown, irrelevant or reveals God as a cosmic kill-joy. Even many
Christians, although they can quote scriptures revealing God's love, fail
to see God's loving heart as a central theme throughout His Word. Why is that?
Tunnel-vision thinking
One reason for this limited vision of God's love is Bible reading and
study that seldom if ever takes a broad view of scripture and God's grand
plan. We get a glimpse from Jesus' perspective as He talked, after His
resurrection, to the two fellow-travelers on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24).
After just having completed the most grand demonstration of love the world
has ever seen - His sacrificial death on the cross - He began appearing to
His disciples and followers to show He was alive and victorious over sin
and death. All the scriptures...
As he talked on the road, "beginning with Moses and with all the prophets,
He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the scriptures."
(Luke 24:27) In other words, He showed them, from every part of the Old
Testament scriptures, that His incarnation, crucifixion and resurrection -
God's glorious plan to open the way to His loving arms - were to be found
everywhere! Jesus could say to many of us as He did to them, "O foolish
men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!" The Extent of His Love
Several years ago, I was asked to teach a Sunday School class. My heart
was being stirred at that point in time by wonderful preaching on God's
love, so I decided to delve into that subject to present to the class.
In His Words...
As I worked, the idea occurred to me to try to express what God had to
say about His dealings with me in a paraphrase, as if coming from His own
lips. Using scripture, I put together a summary of what I saw God had done
and promised to do, written as if He were speaking to me and all the
stressed-out believers in Dallas, Texas that were members of that Sunday
School class.
My Beloved Child...
The result was a love letter from God that I thought most appropriately
called My Beloved Child. Since it was presented in that class, I have
given it out innumerable times, and many have told me of the tears of joy
that followed as their heart leaped in recognition of His mighty
Father-love.
So I provide it here with the prayer that
your heart will be similarly stirred as well. But I also pray that this
will be the start of a life-long love affair with God's Word, as the
expression of all He is and will be for you, in you and through you, throughout eternity. I
suggest you read it in its entirety, then go back and look up each
scripture for the full context of what God is telling you. You are
free to reproduce My Beloved Child for your own use and distribution to
others, as long as it is used in its entirety, including the attribution
at the end "© GodsLoveLetter.org."
